Henry & Josie had spring break recently and we went to Florida.  (And since I know you haven't seen Mr. Henry in awhile, yes, he is taller now.  Six feet tall, actually).

We started our vacation in North Carolina, admiring their spring and picking up Meredith.

Next stop:  Tampa where we went to a Tampa Bay Lightning Game... which they lost but was still very fun.  I did miss the Whooo of the Bruins.

After that we went to visit Avery at her college.  We got to watch her varsity tennis match (which she won - go Avery!)

Here we are:

And finally, we ended up on Sanibel Island where we let our hair down, enjoyed the hot sun and ooohed & ahhhhed over the amazing sunsets.

We are back home now and the relaxed moods of vacation are almost completely over.  Going back to school does that to a person!  Luckily for us, summer isn't that far off.

Josie Turns 12

A few weeks ago, Josie turned twelve.  It was a freezing cold day and Josie was sick.  She caught the horrific cough bug that has been going around and even though it's weeks later, she is still coughing in the family room while I write this post.

Winter is hard, no?

Josie loves a birthday but this one had a few negatives - for one, her birthday fell on a Wednesday this year and Wednesdays (apparently) are the worst school days.  I don't remember exactly why but it had to do with a long math class and some other indignity like no study hall or shortened recess.  Josie did get to bring in treats for her advisory which was positive.

Josie also had hockey on her birthday and usually, that would be a good thing but, as I said before, on her birthday this year, Josie was sick and exercising wasn't easy with the cough and stuffed up nose.

She did get to bring cupcakes to celebrate with her team, so that was positive.  :)

Because her birthday fell on a school day and because Josie has to get up really early on a school day, she elected to open her presents after dinner instead of our traditional before school time.

Josie got a lot of fabulous presents.

And we got to eat a fabulous cake of Josie's choosing and my baking:

She successfully blew out all twelve candles and then had a coughing fit that lasted a few minutes.

Happy Birthday Josie!

Lacrosse Take Two

Josie had to pick a spring sport / activity at school.  In the fall, she played field hockey and in the winter, she did an after school art class (three days a week and she left early from school two days a week in order to get to ice hockey).  The school rule is that you have to play on one sports team a year, so technically Josie could have done another semester of art, but now that ice hockey is (almost) over, Gordy and I wanted Josie to stay active and do daily exercise, so we encouraged her to be on a spring team.

You might remember that years ago, Josie tried lacrosse and hated it.  I think she played for one season and showed no interest in trying another round the following year.  So we were pretty surprised when Josie told us that she had signed up to be on the middle school team.

I had figured she would play tennis.

But no worries!  We have plenty of old hand-me-down lacrosse sticks from Georgia and maybe there's some muscle memory that will help her remember how to catch and throw.

And if not, she can always start all over again.

Gordy took Josie out a couple of weekends ago to practice throwing and catching.

It wasn't going particularly well, so Georgia went out to help and within minutes of explaining how cradling is simply a fast sequence of the commands "Look in the mirror!  Talk on the phone!",  Josie began to catch on to the general concept.

I guess "look in the mirror, talk on the phone" is not the way that Gordy learned to cradle.  He was rather disgusted by the whole thing.

I am giddy about the start of spring sports but only because it means that we are at the end of winter sports.  This is the last week of ice hockey practice for Josie and the last two games of the season are over this weekend.  Yeah!

The first few weeks of lacrosse and soccer aren't the most fun because they are played outdoors and it is still very cold outside, but it's also cold inside the ice rink and at least this is a change.

And so we begin Josie's Lacrosse Take Two.  I'll keep you posted.
